Mississippi Heat - Featuring Carl Weathersby on three tracks

Though this is Pierre Lacocque's band, and he is the principal songwriter and stage front with his harmonica, there is an ensemble feel to all of Mississippi Heat albums. When you listen to this superb CD, you're not just hearing a band. You're hearing a family, one with a deep love, understanding, and respect for each other. That special guest Sax Gordon is so seamlessly incorporated into their signature sound speaks volumes. Fourteen of the sixteen songs here are new originals. Inetta Visor sings most of the songs while guitarist Michael Dotson sings on his three originals and drummer Kenny Smith sings one of his own. From straight-ahead Chicago blues, boogie and swing to Latin beat, Caribbean and funk Warning Shot is a remarkable musical achievement!

Mississippi Heat - Featuring Carl Weathersby

Since Pierre Lacocque founded Mississippi Heat in 1991, the band personnel has varied, but one thing hasn't changed: Mississippi Heat consistently combines the talents of excellent Chicago blues musicians to create Delta-based Chicago blues with originality and panache.

Carl Weathersby has recorded regularly with Mississippi Heat since 1999's Handyman. Here Weathersby plays on every song and solos on six, every bent-note drenched with soul and emotion. He also provides lead vocals on "Hell and Back."

Hold On

Carl Weathersby
It had been five years since Carl's last disc (the great soulful blues CD "Come To Papa" on Evidence Records) and I was starting to wonder what was up with him. Then last year he nearly stole the show from Charles Wilson with his guitar virtuosity on Wilson's Delmark release "If Heartaches Were Nickels". Well, now Carl says "I'm Back Again" on the opener for the TC Davis and Richard Waters-produced "Hold On". It's a vintage phat Albert King-like shuffle blues with sharp, muscular axework by Weathersby. Up next is the New Orleans-flavored groover "Leave Me Alone", one of two excellent songs from fellow bluesman Burton Gaar. The cut features some greasy organ courtesy of Johnny Neel. Even better is Gaar's second contribution, the slow, soul ballad "Willingly". Weathersby had recorded the John Hiatt composition, "Feels Like Rain", before but this time he really makes it his own his own- and that's high praise considering Buddy Guy also did a fine version of this tune. Weathersby himself provided the Southern Soul/blues gems "Hold On", "My Baby" and the loose instrumental "Freedom". Welcome back Carl. -

Triple Fret

Carl Weathersby, Bernard Allison, &  Larry McCray
On this record, the artists celebrate the blues and each share the spotlight throughout.  In the liner notes, there are details of each artist's participation on a song by song basis. The advantage of having such talented and versatile performers is clear from the first listen to this recording, every song is good!  Track four is a favorite.  It starts off slow and then really starts to bump in classic blues manner.  Throughout the record, vocalists take turns and this adds to the variety on a track by track basis.  There are no surprises with the topics covered in the songs. Women, women, and more songs about women.  Of course you have to throw in a lot of pain and suffering and hardship (mostly related to the women!)   This is one great modern blues record that should not be missed!

Excellent CD! A must have! Rivals any funky Blues CD out today! Come Together is one of the best independent CD's I have heard in a long time. Slick, funky, bluesy, and thoughtful, all at the same time. Biscuit isn't only a great bassist, but he's an extremely soulful vocalist! He doesn't confuse shouting at the top of his lungs with singing with soul. Come Together is a refreshing and much needed change. Great job, Biscuit!

Mississippi Heat

Carl Weathersby - lead guitar on tracks #1, #4, #9 & #10

Soulful blues with a unique style and powerful delivery This band continues to come out with new albums. And I have found that each new album improves upon the last. This is remarkable. I enjoyed the bands first album some 8 to 10 years ago and grow to love each new release more and more. I have never heard a band metamorphisize so perfectly over the years. Pierre Lacocque is one of the best songwriters I"ve had the chance to get to know. He also leads the band with power and grace, always adding that beautiful harmonica sound to what would have been a great song to begin with. His playing certainly raises the bar.

Nora Jean Bruso

Carl Weathersby - guitar (all tracks)

Bruso, along with a crack band including some of Chicago?s finest (guitarist Carl Weathersby, first-call bassist Harlan Terson, and guest Dave Spector), invests every note with an utterly ferocious power and conviction that simply blows the cobwebs away. This is music as urgent as life itself, and Bruso herself is like an unstoppable force of nature, seeming not so much to sing the blues as to tear them from a raw and bleeding heart.

If Heartaches Were Nickels

Charles Wilson

Carl Weathersby - guitar (all tracks)

Charles Wilson is an exciting and captivating performer capable of launching an audience into a frenzy. Born in Chicago, he's connected to the roots of the blues tree. From the age of four, Wilson, the nephew of blues legend Little Milton (featured as a special guest on this CD), would go with his father to see Uncle Miltons performances. Wilson released a string of albums starting in the late 80s for Ichiban and Ecko Records. 'If Heartaches Were Nickels' is Wilsons first Delmark album, and in addition to Milton, Carl Weathersby provides lots of excellent guitar playing. Like all great soul singers, Wilson expresses pleading vulnerability, and like the great blues singers, he delivers the grit.

In The House: Live At Lucerne
Vol. 5

Carl Weathersby
Born in 1953, singer and guitarist Carl has followed the familiar Mississippi to Chicago trail, and then on to a Swiss festival stage for this almost one hour long CD. Having worked with the Sons Of Blues for 14 years before stepping out as an artist in his own right eight years ago, and with four albums for the American label Evidence (plus a 'Best of ...') and plenty of experience as a backing musician, Carl is obviously no novice.
The benefits of such an impressive Curriculum Vitae come through loud and clear on this set which runs the whole range from straight ahead Windy City shuffles to the Hendrix inspired closer. For the most part though, Carl exhibits a preference for working in the Stax soul inflected blues field, with Albert King a particularly noticeable influence both vocally and instrumentally (three numbers associated with Albert are included here). The excellent singer Chi-Town singer Otis Clay guests on one number, the ever impressive Windy City harmonica ace Billy Branch on two but this is Carls show and he and his cooking three piece band leave no one in any doubt that, here at least, there were indeed some real blues sounds in the house. Best of Carl Weathersby

Carl Weathersby

No one out there today fires up the blues with more soul than Carl Weathersby. If you haven't sampled the fare of this fine Jackson, Mississippi bluesman, this new CD offers fourteen (count 'em) of the artist's finest tracks from his four previous Evidence releases. Robert Johnson's classic "Hellhound On My Trail" is delivered by Weathersby with true blue finesse, and he eerily reprises the original in a spooky new shade of blue. Carl Weathersby makes every note he sings and play count, and nothing is left to waste. Mighty fine blues, ladies and gentlemen! -

Footprints On The Ceiling has the Mississippi Heat band with guest appearances by Billy Boy Arnold, Carl Weathersby & Peter "Madcat" Ruth. Every song on this one has a different mix of players and singers, this makes for a interesting surprise with each track. This band does great job playing Chicago style blues with old time style, while at the same time doing new music. The band is tight, and Pierre blows a great harp.  I think this one is a keeper, it's easy on the ears. Despite the amputation of parts of both his legs during the course of his career, Chicago guitarist Buster Benton never gave up playing his music -- an infectious hybrid of blues and soul that he dubbed at one point "disco blues" (an unfortunate appellation in retrospect, but useful in describing its danceability). In the late '70s, when blues was at low ebb, Benton's waxings for Ronn Records were a breath of fresh air.

Come To Papa

Carl Weathersby

The prolific guitarist/vocalist continues his ways with Come to Papa , his fourth album in as many years. The spirit of Albert King and his Gibson Flying Vee lives on in Weathersbys guitar work, with its slippery, bent-to-oblivion vibrato riffs, stinging high notes and occasional bassy runs.  Never one to allow himself to be restricted by the I-IV-V blues format, Weathersby infuses this disc with smooth, commercial R&B. "Help Me Somebody" reprises the slick soul of the 70s, and "Floodin in California" is a four-on-the-floor dance cut. But blues purists may rejoice in the absence of the token hard-rock tune that was, until now, a part of every Weathersby recording.  Come to Papa is a very good record, proof that all that roadwork pays off.  Bob Cianci, Blues Access

Restless Feeling

Carl Weathersby
Guitarist and singer Carl Weathersby has garnered accolades from the blues world ever since his 1996 debut, and Restless Feeling deserves praise no less than his previous two albums. With a crunchy, punchy Chicago style layered with soul, Restless Feeling is aptly titled, full of mood and restless energy. Things kick off with the up-tempo "Matchbox Holds My Clothes," and swerve from funkified rock ("A Real Mutha Fuh Ya") to slow sensuality (title track) to a not-quite-smooth soul ("Everything I Do") to a nice, easy slow blues ("Glory Be"). The closing song, "She's Gone," is exactly what you'd expect to hear at the end of a set at your favorite blues bar, and the album is peppered with clean, energetic guitar-picking throughout, backed by a solid rhythm section (including some of the tastiest bass ever to be pressed on CD). --Genevieve Williams

Looking Out My Window

Carl Weathersby
For 17 years, guitarist-vocalist Carl Weathersby was the co-leader of The Sons of Blues, one of Chicagos premier blues bands. His debut CD under his own name, Dont Lay Your Blues On Me (ECD 26075), showcased his skills as a player, singer and songwriter. In fact, it earned him a prestigious W.C. Handy Award nomination this year as Best New Blues Artist. On this CD, Carl plays even harder and funkier, coming up with over an hours worth of great, original blues and imaginative covers, not old standards. Weathersby, who previously received a Handy nomination for his songwriting (The Blues Follow Me Around - Billy Branch, Verve) reprises that tune here as well as performing other originals like the intense title track, Looking Out My Window, the humorous plaint "If That Ain't The Blues" and the gorgeously soulful "Sweet Music".

Don't Lay Your Blues On Me

Carl Weathersby
Weathersby's debut CD as a session leader is a satisfactory set of contemporary guitar-driven blues. From 1982 to 1996 he was guitarist with Chicago harp player Billy Branch's Sons of the Blues. Weathersby plays in an Albert King style, typically bending and sustaining each note for all it's worth. Although his career is not associated with New Orleans, he recorded this album there with ace Crescent City sidemen Lee Zeno on bass, Herman Ernest on drums, and Dave Torkanowsky on keyboards. They lay down a solid foundation that really cooks. ~

This is a magnificently broad collection, as Smithsonian ones usually are. There are beautiful rare nuggets: "I Wonder" by Cecil Gant being my fave. They hit socially conscious stuff here harder than most blues collections - a big plus.

Beyond Another Wall: Live in China

George Gruntz

Featuring Carl Weathersby on guitar

In Nov. 1992 the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band became one of the very first jazz groups to ever tour China. Gruntz's 16-piece orchestra at the time featured such colorful soloists as trumpeters Lew Soloff, Jack Walrath, Tim Hagans and John D'Earth, trombonist Ray Anderson, altoist Chris Hunter and the tenors of Larry Schneider and Bob Malach. For the tour Gruntz brought along bluesmen Billy Branch (on harmonica) and guitarist Carl Weathersby and they are heard singing and playing on three of the six full-length selections, making this set a little more accessible than usual. Ray Anderson's riotous "Literary Lizard" (during which he challenges Lew Soloff in the upper register), Weatherby's emotional guitar solo on "Carl" and the general spirit of this flexible orchestra makes one wonder what the Chinese thought of this extroverted and often eccentric music.

More than a quarter century after he cut his debut album, Bell recently made his finest disc to date. Boasting superior material and musicianship (guitarists Carl Weathersby and Lurrie Bell and pianist Lucky Peterson are all stellar) and a goosed-up energy level that frequently reaches incendiary heights, the disc captures Bell outdoing himself vocally on the ribald "Let Me Stir in Your Pot" and a suitably loose "When I Get Drunk" and instrumentally on the torrid "Jawbreaker." For a closer, Bell settled on the atmospheric Horton classic "Easy"; he does it full justice.

A compilation of the two albums Benton made for the French Black & Blue label in 1983 and 1985, this 15-song collection rates with his best. Two separate bands are involved, and the sound changes with them: backed by harpist Billy Branch's Sons of Blues, Benton exercises his R&B-laced chops, while the older hands behind him on "Honey Bee," "The Hawk Is Coming," and "Hole in My Head" (guitarist Johnny Littlejohn, pianist Leake, drummer Odie Payne) assure that the grooves stay more in the mainstream.
